Installing SMF using Softaculous

SMF (Simple Machines Forum) is a popular open‑source forum application that allows you to build online communities. With Softaculous, you can install SMF quickly and easily through cPanel.

Steps to Install SMF

1. Log in to cPanel.

   • Navigate to the Softaculous Apps Installer section.

2. Search for SMF.

   • In the Softaculous dashboard, type SMF in the search box.

   • Or browse under Forums → SMF (Simple Machines Forum).

3. Click Install.

   • The installation page will open.

4. Choose Protocol.

   • Select https:// or https://www if your site has an SSL certificate.

   • Select http:// or http://www if SSL is not installed.

5. Choose Domain.

   • Select the domain where SMF will be installed.

6. Set Directory.

   • Leave blank if you want SMF installed at the root (e.g., example.com).

   • Enter a folder name (e.g., forum) if you want SMF installed at example.com/forum.

7. Configure Forum Settings.

   • Board Name → Enter the name of your forum (appears in browser title bar).

   • Board Email → Enter the forum’s email address.

8. Set Admin Account.

   • Admin Username → Choose a unique username.

   • Admin Password → Use a strong password (Softaculous provides a strength meter or can generate one).

   • Real Name → Enter the display name for the administrator.

   • Admin Email → Enter the administrator’s email address.

9. Select Language.

   • Choose the default language for your forum.

10. Database Settings.

    • Provide a database name or accept the default.

    • Configure table prefix if needed.

11. Advanced Options (Optional).

    • Configure automated backups and rotation.

    • Enable email notifications for updates.

12. Install.

    • Review settings and click Install.

    • Wait for confirmation. Softaculous will display the SMF login URL (e.g., example.com/forum/index.php).
