When you look up your IP address, the location it shows may not match where you actually are. For example, your server might physically be in Lagos, but the IP lookup shows the U.S. or Europe.

What Is Geolocation?

  • Geolocation is the process of mapping an IP address to a real-world location.

  • It’s based on databases maintained by third-party providers, not on the actual GPS or physical address of the server.

  • These databases are often approximate and can be outdated or inaccurate.

Why Geolocation Can Be Wrong

  1. IP Leasing

    • Hosting companies (like Ruachost or others) often lease IP addresses from large providers.

    • If the provider is based in another country, the IP may still show that country’s location — even if the server is physically elsewhere.

  2. Limited IP Address Pool

    • There aren’t unlimited IPv4 addresses.

    • Providers reuse and reassign IPs, so the geolocation record may not update immediately.

  3. Database Lag

    • Geolocation services (like MaxMind, IP2Location, etc.) update their records periodically.

    • If your IP was recently reassigned, it may take weeks or months before the database reflects the new location.

  4. Proxy or VPN Use

    • If you’re behind a VPN, proxy, or CDN (like Cloudflare), the IP shown may be from a completely different region.

Can You Find the Exact Location of an IP?

  • There’s no foolproof way to determine the exact physical location of an IP address without legal authority (like a warrant to the ISP).

  • Tools like traceroute (or tracert on Windows) can show the path your connection takes and give hints about the data center’s region
